| DevRel China GDG Community Program Quarterly Report
Q2, 2013
|
New GDG Established this Quarter - In the
second quarter of this year, Developer Relations in China has founded 3 new GDG communities in China, in the city of Xiamen (4/13), Zhangjiakou (6/19), and Urumqi (6/29) ;
- With these three new GDGs joining the China and global GDG family
, the total number of GDGs in China has now grow to 15 nationwide;
- With these new GDGs, there are more than 530 developers now joining the active community of Google Developers in China, now 8,000+ nationwide;
- Among the 500+ new GDG members, 255 of them have also joined G+ and circled the ir
GDG 's
G+ page. This initial 50% G+ adoption rate is much higher than the past national average of other GDGs G+ adoption rate (below 40%) when they were founded (due to GFW blockage). This is due to GDG organizers efforts
for active ly
promoting G+ among their members -
they even
used the tactics of only G+ members could get special swags at GDG
events to push for G+ adoption;
- Also noteworthy is that not long
after the founding event, both Xiamen GDG and Zhangjiakou GDG have already organized their own first Google technology learning event. Their fast action in
hit-the-ground-and-run ning
very much attributed to the large (5 people) and strong organizers' team in each city. Xiamen GDG's first independent
event had 65+ people attending, while Zhangjiakou GDG's two events had nearly 250 people attending.

China's GDG Learning Events in Q2 - Thanks to the continued dedication and efforts by our passionate GDG organizers, and the
funding support from DevRel, i
n the
second quarter of this year, GDGs in China ha ve
organized 55 learning events, which had total audience size of 3,678 attendees - see table below;
- That's a huge jump from previous quarter (Q1)'s 20 events and 1,583 attendees - a n amazing
175% increase in event number ,
and a 132% increase in developers and college students these
events touched !
Below is a breakdown of the events by these GDGs:
- As mentioned before, we should keep in mind that these GDGs in China are facing the extra difficulties in promoting Google technologies that other GDGs around the world are not
- they are operating in a very tough environment where almost all Google products and services are either not available or blocked by the GFW. The GDG organizers went out of their way to find creative solutions to overcome the obstacles, including teaching their community members how to overcome the firewall's blockage through various techniques ;
- Many of these GDGs are also getting creative to help us reducing the sponsorship budget burden as we have
increasing number of GDGs need to support, by finding cheap or free event venues for their events. Shanghai GDG, for example, even managed to negotiate with other local companies such as Autodesk China
and ARM China
to let them using their corporate facilities for free - as you can see from one of the photos below, it's quite amusing to see that
a bunch of developers learning Google technologies at Autodesk's office.
Below are some of their above events photos - their passion in
learning Google technologies and supporting Google's platform and ecosystem are on full display. More of their event photos and summaries
can be seen from their communities G+ pages as well as on
nationwide ChinaGDG.com forum event summary page .

What's coming up
- The next two quarters should be even more interesting, as there are
at least 6 GDGs in China plan to
hold their large scale DevFest
events this year;
- There are at least another 3 cities having the GDG organizing team fully assembled, and they are
ready to be formally established once the university opens again after the summer. Moreover,
more volunteers have been found and lined up ready
to be the organizers to form new GDGs in even more cities.
GDG program truly helps Google set a firm foot in this largest Internet market of the world by staying relevant and keep the strongly following despite
all the challenges , kudos to so many passionate organizers and volunteers who share our vision and value and believing in innovation for the progress of society.
